Essentially Swing Bio
From piccolo to trombone and from rags to rock Ďní roll Essentially Swing brings a unique blend of tonal colour to the music from around the great era of Swing. One might usually begin setting up a band with the premise that the style of music sets the requirement for specific instruments. Essentially Swing grew from completely different roots. Founder of the band, Carolyn Goates, started with a love of swing music, a saxophone and a group of enthusiastic flautists. From this unlikely beginning we can add Carolynís sister Chandra who brought the clarinet into the mix. One clarinet led to another and before long we had an 11-piece band; a piccolo, 4 flutes, 3 clarinets, soprano, alto and tenor saxes. So, we had the upper and middle parts of the spectrum, and this worked pretty well for a while. But we were missing something. So one by one we extended our bottom end (pun intended) with the addition of our French horn, baritone sax and trombone. In the 2 years since we began we have grown to a 15-strong band.

We can liven up a party and create that lovely nostalgic atmosphere. We usually play at fund-raising events for charity. However, we are also available for hire at private functions.

We rehearse one Monday morning a month in Rushmere St. Andrew. The group is very friendly and relaxed. If you would like to join us or would like us to play at your event please contact Carolyn via carol.a.goates@gmail.com or msg. 07759 745730

Our repertoire includes those unforgettable songs from the great swing era as well as ragtime, jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll including:

  • Moonlight Serenade
  • In The Mood
  • I Got Rhythm
  • American Patrol
  • Sentimental Journey
  • Java Jive
  • Basin Street Blues
  • Rock Around The Clock
  • Alexander's Ragtime Band

In addition we can add some tonal variety with our trio who can park their instruments and pick up the microphones to sing a couple of songs here and there. If required we can also create an entertaining sing-along with some of the old Music Hall songs. It may not be Swing, but can give people a chance to have some fun joining in the music making.

We've named this satellite group Sisters of Swing. We are three girls who have been singing together in one form or another for several years now. We love singing Andrews Sisters style songs like:

  • Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree
  • Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
  • Chattanooga Choo Choo
  • Bei Mir Bistu Shein
